Today At Apple

December 31, 2019

Apple approached us at Shadow Factory to do a presentation on our work with the West Kowloon Cultural District. Pricewaterhouse Coopers (PwC) had partnered up with us at Shadow Factory to created a virtual reality pre-visualization of the Xiqu centre which had been set up at the City Gallery in the center of Hong Kong for over 7 months. The experience took guests on a tour of the not yet completed Xiqu center which apart from being a shopping mall would also house cultural performances and exhibitions.

We decided that Warrell (who was our point of contact at PwC and after the project ended up joining Shadow Factory) would start the presentation talking about the pre-production stage of the project.

I then took over and talked about the Production stage of the project.
Went into detail about what it is to be a 3D artist and the tools we use. Here I am talking about modelling in Maya.
Talked about the clever ways artists make their experience more efficient (here through the use of LOD's)
Next we showcased the amount of work it took to re-build all the parts of the Xiqu Centre showcasing sections of the building. Here you can see the ceiling of the Atrium and the exterior walls.

Modeling the Auditorium
Talking about populating the space with scanned 3D models of people
Talked about the process of lighting the environment in the Unreal Engine.
Adding game logic to the game to make it come to life. Here showcasing Unreal's blueprint editor a visual programming system.
After the talk we had a 1 hour workshop where we split everyone into 3 sections. In this section you can see me showcasing Augmented Reality on the IPad. We had imported the Xiqu Centre into a AR App which we had designed and people could place it in the real world using the IPad and view it from different angles and interact with it.
We also had created a "Design your own VR experience" experience. Delegates were given a theme park VR experience and asked to choose which Camera positions they wanted their experience to show and in what order essentially creating their own customized VR Tour.

We also showcased the Xiqu Centre VR experience for those that didn't get a chance to see it yet.

All in all it was a terrific experience putting together this workshop and presenting at Apple one which I am very grateful to have had the experience of doing and one that I would do again in a heartbeat. We got to meet alot of people who were interested in this topic and it was nice to share our experience with putting together the Xiqu centre project.
